The interior roads from Pahalgam to Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari are reserved for registered local taxis. But the self drive car can be used for Pahalgam town as well as for other valleys.
No Inner Line Permit is required for Pahalgam itself. Permits are only needed for a few restricted areas like Gurez Valley.
A hatchback or sedan is enough — the road is smooth highway for almost the entire route. An SUV is only worth the extra cost if you want more space or plan to combine the trip with a rougher route.
