Most tourists visiting Gulmarg book a shared cab or a driver attached vehicle. That works fine for a single day trip. However, if you want the flexibility to stop at scenic viewpoints for photos, take a detour to Drung Waterfall or stay at Apharwat Peak until dusk, then a self-drive car for Gulmarg is the better choice.
A self-drive car makes the most sense if you want to:
Beat the crowd by reaching the gondola base early, before the day tour buses arrive.
Build Gulmarg into a flexible loop with Tangmarg, Drung waterfall or a Srinagar evening without renegotiating fares.
Travel as a couple or small family who value privacy over a packed shared cab.
Keep costs predictable: within Kashmir there are no kilometre limits on our self-drive rentals, so a Gulmarg day trip won’t trigger extra charges.

The primary driving route from Srinagar to Gulmarg covers approximately 56 kilometres one way and passes through some of Kashmir’s most scenic countryside. Here is what to expect:
Srinagar → Magam (via NH1 / Srinagar–Baramulla Highway)
The first 30 kilometres out of Srinagar are smooth, well maintained highway. Traffic is moderate in the mornings. Most rental drivers cover this stretch in under 45 minutes.
Magam → Tangmarg
After turning off the main highway at Magam, the road climbs gradually toward Tangmarg. This 14-kilometre stretch passes through pine lined hillsides and small Kashmiri villages. The road is good to excellent during summer and monsoon months. In winter, snow begins to appear here and occasional slush or compacted ice is common after heavy snowfall.
Tangmarg → Gulmarg (The Final 13 Kilometres)
This is the scenic highlight of the drive. The road narrows, ascends steeply and weaves through thick conifer forests. In peak winter (December–February), this section frequently experiences snowfall and requires snow chains or dedicated snow tyres. During summer, the road is clear and enjoyable, with meadows visible through the tree line.
Road Condition Summary
| Stretch | Distance | Road Quality | Winter Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar → Magam | ~30 km | Excellent | Clear year-round |
| Magam → Tangmarg | ~14 km | Good | Light snow possible during snowfall |
| Tangmarg → Gulmarg | ~13 km | Moderate–Good | Snow chains recommended (Nov–Mar) |
Fuel up and draw cash at Tangmarg. There is no fuel pump in Gulmarg itself and card/UPN coverage thins out higher up, so top up the tank and carry some cash before the final climb.
Choosing the right car matters, especially if you are visiting in winter or planning to stay in Gulmarg for multiple days.

Spring, summer & autumn (April–October)
For most of the year the drive is genuinely easy. The highway to Tangmarg is smooth and the Tangmarg–Gulmarg ghat may be steep and winding but is paved and manageable for any car driven sensibly. A hatchback or sedan is perfectly fine in these months. The only real caution is the tight switchbacks on the climb: stay in a low gear, use engine braking on the way down and give horns a tap on blind bends.
The final 13 km (Tangmarg → Gulmarg)
This is the section that defines the trip. It gains height quickly through dense forest with sharp hairpins and few barriers. In good weather it’s a pleasure. In snow it becomes the most important part of your planning which brings us to winter.
Heads-up for December–March visitors. Gulmarg can get 4–5 metres of snowfall in peak winter and the administration enforces strict rules on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road. These are current as of the 2026 season but always change with the day’s weather so it is better to confirm the live status with us before you set off.
One thing that surprises first time visitors is that commercial vehicles are not allowed into the main area of Gulmarg. You have to park at the designated parking lot near the entrance and walk about 10–15 minutes to reach the Gondola base.
However, if you rent a Srinagar to Gulmarg self drive car, you can access most places within Gulmarg by simply paying the required entry or parking fee, if applicable.
Gulmarg is one corner of a wider self drive map. Because there are no kilometre limits within Kashmir, many travellers chain destinations across a multi-day rental. Popular pairings from the same car:

Q. Can I drive a self drive rental car all the way to Gulmarg town?
A: Yes. The road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is open to private vehicles. However, during heavy snowfall periods, the forest road (Tangmarg to Gulmarg) may be temporarily closed by authorities. Always check conditions before travel, especially between December and February.
Q: Can I drive a self drive car to Gulmarg in winter?
A: Yes, but with rules. Beyond Tangmarg the administration allows only 4×4 vehicles and cars fitted with anti skid chains. In heavy snowfall, private vehicles are stopped at Tangmarg and you take a local snow jeep for the final 13 km. If you are not confident on snow, we recommend a 4×4 or a chauffeur for the Gulmarg leg.
Q. Is a driving licence required for self drive car rental in Kashmir? Yes. A valid Indian driving licence is mandatory. Foreign nationals should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their home country licence. Our team will verify documents at the time of vehicle handover.
Q. Do your self drive cars come with snow chains for the Gulmarg trip?
A: Snow chain availability varies by season and vehicle. Please inform our team at the time of booking that you are driving to Gulmarg in winter and we will advise on whether chains are included or need to be arranged separately. Carrying your own set is always a good precaution.
Q: Is there a petrol pump near Gulmarg?
A: There is no petrol pump inside Gulmarg town. The nearest pump is in Tangmarg, approximately 13 km before Gulmarg. Always fuel up fully in Tangmarg (or Magam) before the final ascent.
Q: Can I keep the self drive car in Gulmarg overnight?
A: Yes. Multi day rentals are available and commonly used by travellers who stay in Gulmarg for 2–4 nights. The car parks at your hotel or guesthouse. Ensure your accommodation has parking space, as Gulmarg has limited facilities during peak ski season.
Q: Can foreign tourists self drive to Gulmarg?
A: Yes. Foreign visitors need a valid International Driving Permit alongside their home licence and a passport for ID. The same Gulmarg road rules and winter advisories apply to everyone.
Q: Should I self drive or hire a driver for Gulmarg?
A: Self drive is ideal for the flexibility and privacy, especially April–October. If you are visiting in deep winter and are not used to snow driving on steep roads, hiring a driver for the Gulmarg day or for the Tangmarg Gulmarg leg only is the safer, often cheaper choice.
